Waso Nursery School, Archer's Post

Waso school

Just north of the town of Isiolo in central Kenya, Waso Complex Nursery School sits on the edge of the arid Northern Frontier. The region is inhabited by Boran, Turkana and Samburu people, some of whom are nomads, moving with their flocks of sheep, camels, cattle and goats in search of forage. There is a strong Muslim influence from Somalia. The CBS show, Survivor Africa, was produced in the Shaba National Reserve, just minutes away, and meeting wildlife on the way to school is not an uncommon occurrence for the children.

Luginia Akiru teaches a class of 35. Luginia has an early childhood education teaching certificate and has created many of her teaching aids herself, including a science corner, a math corner and a little store where children learn to use money. She has taught the children many songs and dances and they are a delight to watch.

At the Waso Nursery, FKSW has provided resources for:
  • primary school scholarships for 10 children for 8 years each
  • construction of toilets
  • construction of a kitchen for the preparation of school lunches
  • school supplies and other educational materials
  • partial salary for Luginia
  • emergency food in time of drought
  • neem tree seedlings for the school compound
  • fencing material to keep the wildlife out
